THE PAT TEST

IS NOT A LEGAL REQUIREMENT . . . BUT IT MAKES GOOD SENSE

Portable appliance testing (PAT). The inspection & testing of electrical appliances and equipment that are not fixed or hardwired, to ensure they are safe to use. Visual examinations may show defects or obvious signs that an appliance may be unsafe but some defects can only be found by testing. Visual assessments are an important process and aspect of our work as some faults can't necessarily be detected solely through an electrical test.
A basic knowledge of electrical appliances and maintenance may suffice for visual inspections, However, the rigour and assurity that comes from regular testing by a competent person, utilising calibrated specialist testing equipment, is usually necessary.
It is the employers responsibility to ensure that all equipment is maintained and safe to use.

WHO NEEDS EQUIPMENT TO BE PAT TESTED ?

All Businesses with on or off site Portable Electrical Equipment and in particular Event Companies involved in the HIRE or INSTALLATION of Portable Electrical Equipment are strongly recommended that all equipment is regularly tested and formally inspected before each hire ensuring it is safe to use. The equipment should also remain safe throughout a hire period.
PAT Tests provide the assurance that as an Individual, Company or Organisation, you have carried out due diligence in protecting all users whether they be staff or a member of the public.

HOW OFTEN ?

As often as necessary to ensure the electrical item/s remain safe. As a very general rule, items that remain in situ require less frequent testing than those which are moved to numerous locations or are under heavy usage. We recommend that a PAT test is completed annually. In most cases, those involved within the Event & Hospitality provision of equipment & services, will be required to submit evidence of testing to Hotels & Venues with an Annual commitment. For this reason, when we have completed your testing, we will notify you of your next anticipated test date.
